Hagiwara ruins

There is a village of the Hagiwara in the right side of the path leading to Seyama after passing the Horaisan shrine from the village of Kasada. It is thought that the Nankaido Hagiwara Umaya (a facility providing horses and food) had stood in this area. An excavation investigation was carried out at the small village of “Kidoguchi” but the specific spot is still unknown. There is a theory that the Hagiwara Umaya was located in the village of Kasada other than Hagiwara. The first sight of the Hagiwara Umaya was the Kaga Umaya set in 702. There used to be an umaya every 16 kilometers along the Nankaido and there were umayas set up in the Kinokuni to the city as well, the Nagusa Umaya is assumed to have been at 16 km point from Kada Umaya, and judging from the distance, the Hagiwara Umaya is thought to have been located in/around the village of Hagiwara. However, there are no records of these umayas in 702, and in 811, the umayas in Hagiwara, Nagusa, and Kada had suddenly been abolished. It is considered that this is because the capital had moved from Heiankyo (Yamatonokuni) to Heijokyou (Yamashironokuni) and it affected the Nankaido to change its route.
