After the Jinshin War in 672, many temples were built by the powerful local families (Go-zoku) during the reign of Emperor Tenmu and Empress Jito (the Hakuho era). When the Nankaido was constructed, there were also many temples in Kinokuni. On this route you go down the straight-lined path of the Nankaido visiting many temples and shrines along the way.
